Plan Your Pitch
All you have to do is answer these questions. Which media outlets should you be targeting? Has the story you’re suggesting been done before? What makes your story newsworthy? Do you have high quality images, videos, and sound bytes to go with with your story? If you can answer these questions, then it’s time to move on to…
Get Your Structure Right
For this, I recommend looking for material others have written. Identify the media outlets you will be targeting and look at the stories that the publicists are publishing online. Study the structure of what’s making it into the media and use that as your model.
Write Your Pitch
Your goal should be to reach out and grab the publicist’s attention by the throat. Highlight the juiciest bits of your story. Include high quality images, videos, and sound bytes. If you can find posts and reviews from your customers online, toss those in as well. If you’re stuck on what to say, just ask yourself “If you were the publicist receiving this pitch in an email, would you open it, read it, and be excited to reply?” If your answer is “No”, then keep working on it until it’s a “Yes”.
Write Your Email
When you have your pitch, images, videos, and sound bytes all put together in a well organized document, now you need to write a very short (but fascinating) email. And when I say “very short”, I’m talking less than 100 words. Publicists are busy and bombarded with dozens (if not hundreds) of emails a day. To capture and command their attention, keep your words short, sharp, and to the point. It’s important to understand and respect that publicists are always under an incredible amount of stress, pressure, and deadlines. Rather than just sending an email to 1 or 2 publicists a week, try to send an email to 10 to 20 publicists a day.
