Would you like to build your network, so you can unlock more opportunities?
All you have to do is…
Join a Community.
Humans don’t function well in isolation. We need to be part of a community to survive. Understanding how to build and maintain a network is one of the smartest things you can do as an entrepreneur.
Today, I’d like to share 4 secrets that will help you build your network so you can unlock more opportunities.
Share Private Information
Private information is much more valuable than public information. It’s the kind you can only obtain through interactions with personal contacts. Say, for example, an unpublished software code, or the release date of a new product, or what a potential employer is really looking for in an interview. Access to skill sets is another huge benefit of networking. When you trade information or skills with people whose experiences differ from your own, you “swap” valuable resources, providing mutual benefits.
Work On Your First Impressions
Think about how you’ll introduce yourself to a new contact. Consider how you’ll appear in their eyes. You could even write out a short script to yourself: a few lines of what you’d want someone to remember about you after your first conversation. Practice your introduction a few times, then revise it for every five to ten people you meet thereafter.
Always Follow Up
Consider sending something that reinforces the first impression you wanted to make. If you discussed your mutual interest in art, for example, forward them some information about an upcoming art exhibition. If this person is someone who might provide you with valuable information over the next few years, you’ll want them to feel like you have something in common.
Give More, More Often
You could write a mini how-to guide for your local high school about how you got to where you are today. How about a “What I Have Learned From Life So Far” ebook for an entrepreneurial club? Seek out those who will help you and whom you can help in return. Even if you only make one new connection every few months, this will quickly add up to a powerful batch of people within just a couple of years.
